Export Dry

EXPORT DRY – THE BEER THAT SAVED MEN FROM WINE

The '80s were a dark time for New Zealand men. Wine had effectively replaced beer. So Morton Coutts, Head Brewer of DB Breweries, set to work brewing a sophisticated lager that would give wine a run for its money. The result was Export Dry. Dry's extended batch fermentation and long cool maturation process created a premium lager that did the impossible. Anyone can make a beer that is refreshing and anyone can make a beer that is full of flavour, but only Morton could brew one that did both. Thanks to its sophisticated taste, men could finally say no to wine.

Export Dry went on to win Best Lager in the World in 1994, and gold medals at the 2010 and 2011 Monde Selection. Wine didn't even get a finalist.

HSI

Growing talent in hospitality
The Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI) is the industry training organization for hospitality in New Zealand. HSI develops and looks after qualifications to up-skill people in the hospitality sector, and has resources to teach those qualifications. Promoting hospitality as a profession to school students, employers and workers, is a key part of what HSI does. So too is the supply of innovative and industry-relevant products to support training in the workplace. Recognising talent and celebrating achievement in the hospitality sector, such as the gaining of nationally recognised qualifications, and acknowledging those employers who show commitment to training their staff is very important too.

There is a range of qualifications available, suited to all roles at all levels in the five key sectors of the hospitality industry – accommodation; cafés, restaurants and bars; clubs; food services, and quick-service restaurants. Fit for purpose training programmes, from short courses to meet specific needs such as customer service skills – such as Greet New Zealand and Greet Leadership – through to National Certificates and Diplomas are all part of the career pathways on offer in hospitality.
HSI is a Co-ordinator of New Zealand's Modern Apprenticeship scheme, and works with schools, training providers and businesses to make sure people in the vibrant hospitality sector are skilled and qualified.

Hospitality is a sector that is a rite of passage for many New Zealanders. Probably a large proportion of the people you know – business leaders, teachers, doctors, academics – have done their time, and learned valuable skills, working in hospitality. Skills learnt in hospitality – working with people, teamwork, sales and problem solving – are actually the foundation skills for any successful career. For many people, hospitality becomes much more than just a job; it's a career and a business.
