The 14,400 square metre Edgar Centre is the largest indoor recreation facility under one roof in the Southern Hemisphere. It contains 21 courts, 16 multi-use and 5 wooden, providing for a wide range of active and passive activities. Community activities such as school sports days, coaching programmes, team trainings, club use, birthday parties use the venue as well as the usual sports of netball, basketball, indoor football, volleyball and tennis. Events such as concerts, trade shows, exhibitions and conventions are also held at the Edgar Centre.
Dunedin's International Ice Skating Arena, the Dunedin Ice Stadium, is the New Zealand premier ice sports complex. With a full size Olympic ice hockey arena and a four lane curling sheet, the complex is recognised as the premier ice sports facility in Australasia. The Ice Stadium operates year round for public skating, and event include ice hockey, speed skating and curling tournaments at every level, including the Masters Games. Forum Field Trip 2 - BEACHES, ROADS AND RECREATION
What does a City do when the sea decides to take over its sportsfields? And what about the houses behind? An opportunity to see how Dunedin City is attempting to deal with the effects of coastal erosion on the city's most popular urban beach and the impact on some of its prime sports fields.
A little further along the beach is John Wilson Ocean Drive which leads to the iconic headland known as Lawyers Head with views across the city's southern suburbs and along the Otago coast. Walk the road, to the Headland and add your opinion to the debate over whether the road should be open to cars or retained as a recreational asset.
Forum Field Trip 3 - WET AND WONDERFUL
Are stormwater management and recreation mutually exclusive? This field trip visits two sites, to show that when it is done well, stormwater management areas can provide great open spaces but when it is not done well, they are a nightmare.
