The 2009 KANZ Broadband Summit: Digital Futures will be hosted by New Zealand's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Hon Steven Joyce and has the support of the Korean Communications Commission and the Australian Department for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy.
Korean Communications Commission
The Korean Communications Commission (KCC) is fully responsible for both broadcasting policy and regulation of the former Korean Broadcasting Commission and communications policy and regulation of the former Ministry of Information and Communication. KCC aims to proactively respond to the convergence between broadcasting and telecommunications and to ensure the freedom and the public interest of broadcasting, as well as to promote balanced development and global competitiveness of broadcasting and telecommunications industry.
KCC is responsible for establishing policy (convergence, radio, broadcasting and communications), promoting services, developing convergence technologies, managing radio resources, promoting market competition, building more sophisticated broadcasting and communications network, preventing adverse effects of broadcasting and communications, establishing protective measures for users, and investigating and settling unfair practices and disputes in the marketplace.
KCC was established in 2008 as the administrative organisation, under the office of the President, to actively respond to the trend of convergence between broadcasting and telecommunications and to allow all people to enjoy the full benefits of the convergence.
Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy
The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE) provides strategic advice and professional support to the Australian Government on a wide range of significant and rapidly changing policy areas, such as broadcasting and content, broadband, telecommunications, and the digital economy. The Department also administers legislation, regulations, grants and incentives to the communications industry and the wider community.
The Department supports the Australian Government in key priority areas such as the implementation of the National Broadband Network and associated regulatory reform, and is responsible for providing advice on telecommunications and online services, consumer issues and postal services, the digital economy, ICT innovation, convergence, e-security, broadcasting and digital television matters.
The Department's involvement with the Korea-Australia-New Zealand Broadband Summit started at the first Summit held in Australia in 2003, and since then it has continued through subsequent Summits with the Department playing a key role in terms of both setting policy directions for future events, and coordinating Australian representation and participation to the event.
