The organising committee was pleased at the number of registrants and hoped we achieved our goal of a memorable meeting. Our delegate list had anaesthetists coming from almost as many countries as those in the world cup!! Our scientific programme had a strong interactive component from our visiting speakers who gave enlightening, provocative and stimulating presentations. We were very pleased to have the President of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesia (WFSA), Dr Angela Enright open the conference.

In addition we have internationally recognised attendees who will contribute to the conference. These include; the President of ANZCA (Professor Kate Leslie), the President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (Dr Andrew Mulcahy) , as well as our national president of the NZSA (Dr Rob Carpenter) and the Chair of the National Committee (Dr Geoff Long).

But all work is no fun! Our social programme encouraged attendees to rekindle their party years and take advantage of Auckland's revamped entertainment scene.

We are glad you could join us for a great conference, with fantastic weather, a great venue and a great bunch of people.

ANZCA NZNC Chair Welcome

ANZCA NZNC Chair Welcome

On behalf of the New Zealand National Committee (NZNC) of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Auckland for New Zealand Anaesthesia's 2011 annual scientific meeting.

I really enjoy our ASMs. Their intimate nature provides an opportunity to go to whatever is on offer, and I find the exposure to other areas of practice stimulating and a good way to keep in touch with current trends across a broad range within our speciality. It is good to hear some of our local speakers in addition to the visiting experts – there's a wealth of talent out there.

The NZNC and the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists co-host this meeting but the real work has been done by the organising committee drawn from the Department of Anaesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at North Shore Hospital, with Dr Michal Kluger as convener.

They have put together a marvellous programme for us, all within the exciting New Horizons theme. I am sure that you will find plenty to interest you in the wide range of topics – scientific and otherwise – as well as the excellent social events and a fully-subscribed industry exhibition.

I hope as many of you as possible – trainees, ANZCA Fellows and other specialist anaesthetists – will take this opportunity to gather in Auckland, to learn – and to interact as members of New Zealand's anaesthesia community. I look forward to seeing you there.

Message from the President of the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists

Welcome to NZ Anaesthesia ASM 2011.

Welcome to delegates, partners, speakers and exhibitors to New Zealand.

The theme for this meeting is "New Horizons". We hope that this meeting programme will interest, challenge and encourage you to consider new perspectives in your practice and personal life.
The practice of anaesthesia as we know it is faced with concerns over population demographics and increasing demand in the face of limited resources. Several of our speakers consider different approaches to this issue.

Dr David Bogood will present matters as diverse as medico-legal safety, alternative care practitioners in the UK and the changing face of publications. Professor Guy Ludbrook will present on new methods for analgesia delivery and physician assistants.

The NZSA Visiting Speaker for 2011 is Professor Alan Merry, and he will discuss emerging strategies in communication and safety in anaesthesia practice.

Dr Tony Smith will ask delegates, "What's new in pre‐hospital care?" and Assoc. Professor Ken Whyte's address on sleep, obesity and pulmonary hypertension will provide much practical guidance to delegates. I'm delighted that Professor John Myburgh, Dr Keith Petrie and Dr Ross Kerridge are also able to join us and offer their sage advice and entertaining addresses on new developments in the world of intensive care medicine, psychological medicine, pre‐operative preparation and patient safety beyond the operating theatre.

In order to keep a broad perspective, the New Horizons scientific programme will be complemented with invited speaker sessions from Sir Ray Avery and Nigel Latta. Sir Ray Avery was New Zealander of the Year 2010 and is an energetic inventor, pharmaceutical scientist and philanthropist. Nigel Latta is a clinical psychologist, author and TV personality. His presentation will focus our attention on our personal lives and how we can facilitate better interactions with people on a daily basis.

From Canada I am delighted to welcome Dr Angela Enright, President WFSA, to our shores.

This annual scientific event is well timed to take place in Auckland shortly after the Rugby World Cup, enabling delegates to plan their stay and to combine work and pleasure in one journey. I encourage Kiwis to make all visiting delegates and exhibitors welcome during their stay and I hope that all attendees will be inspired to meet those challenges emerging on their horizon.

Thank you to Dr Michal Kluger, Convenor of New Horizons, to Drs Mark Chaddock and Ian Harrison, Scientific Convenors, and to the Organising Committee, speakers and sponsors for bringing this meeting to fruition!

I look forward to meeting you at New Horizons, NZ Anaesthesia ASM 2011.

Dr Robert Carpenter
President
